Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know Before You Renovate

Planning a bathroom renovation comes with plenty of questions, whether you’re just getting started or ready to move ahead with your project. At Blue Sky Home Renovations, we believe in making the process as simple and transparent as possible, which is why we’ve put together this collection of frequently asked questions.

Here, you’ll find clear, practical answers covering everything from costs and timelines to design decisions and what to expect along the way, so you can move forward with confidence.

General Bathroom Renovation Questions:

How much does a typical bathroom renovation cost in Australia?

A typical mid-range bathroom renovation generally costs between $30,000 and $45,000 plus GST. This usually includes a full strip-out of the existing bathroom, installation of new fixtures, and mid-range tiles and finishes. In some cases, minor layout changes may also be included.

Plumbing and tiling are generally the most expensive trades involved in a bathroom renovation. When it comes to materials, the vanity is often the most expensive individual item to purchase.

A full bathroom renovation typically takes between three and five weeks to complete.

That includes demolition, plumbing and electrical rough-ins, waterproofing (with required drying time), tiling, and final fit-off. Larger or more complex renovations can take longer, especially if structural work or layout changes are involved.

Just contact us through our website or give us a call to arrange an on-site visit. We’ll come out, assess your current bathroom, talk through what you’re looking to achieve, and then provide you with a clear, detailed written quote outlining the scope of work and costs.

Planning & Process Questions:

The best starting point is to contact us. During our first home visit, we will measure your bathroom and talk through layout ideas and options. We also provide free design consultations to help finalise your selections.

Budget is usually the first thing to consider. It’s also important to think about how the bathroom will be used and the overall flow of the space. For example, will it be a busy family bathroom or a relaxing ensuite?

A typical renovation sequence includes demolition, plumbing and electrical rough-ins, plastering, waterproofing, tiling, painting, plumbing and electrical fit-off, installation of finishing items such as shower screens and towel rails, and a final clean.

Before the renovation begins, we will go through the entire process with you to make it as easy as possible. It is also helpful to consider the best time to complete the renovation and what options you have while the bathroom is out of action.

It is generally best to hire a local professional. Finding the right trades can be difficult, and work such as waterproofing, tiling, plumbing and electrical installation carries risk if not completed correctly. If the renovation is not properly project-managed and completed by licensed and experienced trades, it can lead to major issues and costly repairs.

In most cases, you do not need to move out during the renovation.

It usually depends on whether other bathroom facilities are available on the property or nearby that can be used during the renovation. Most people remain in the home during the renovation.

Inclusions & Custom Options:

A full bathroom renovation includes everything from demolition through to the final clean.

This typically involves removing the existing bathroom, completing all construction work, installing new fixtures and fittings, and managing the entire project from start to finish. It also includes advice on the layout and design.

Yes. Following a complimentary design consultation, we provide a concept floor plan based on your ideas, along with our experience in bathroom design. We can also assist with the selection of fixtures, fittings and finishes to help bring the overall design together.

Yes. We regularly install walk-in showers, non-slip floor tiles, grab rails and other features that improve safety and accessibility.

We work with trusted local suppliers where homeowners can select the fixtures and fittings they prefer for their renovation.

Cost Variables & Considerations:

Bathroom renovations involve several trades that add to the overall cost. In addition, bathroom fixtures and fittings such as vanities, tiles, tapware and other materials can also be quite expensive depending on the selections made.

The terms renovate and remodel are often used to describe similar types of work. A full bathroom renovation allows you to create a completely new, refreshed space rather than simply replacing individual items like a vanity or toilet and making minor improvements.

Labour makes up a significant portion of a bathroom renovation because several different trades are involved. These trades include demolition, plumbing, electrical work, waterproofing, tiling and installation of fixtures and fittings.

Licensing, Permits & Warranties:

Requirements can vary depending on the scope of the renovation. If structural changes are involved or the bathroom renovation forms part of a larger building project, approvals may sometimes be required.

Common Issues & Fixes:

If mould or water damage is discovered during the renovation, we will discuss the issue with you and determine the best way to address it. This may involve replacing affected materials or carrying out remediation work before continuing with the renovation.

Yes. These types of issues can be addressed as part of the renovation process.

Delays are usually caused by unforeseen issues discovered during the renovation, e.g., hidden water damage, asbestos or termite damage that may only become visible once demolition begins.
